The era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents fundamental challenges to contemporary pastoral counseling practice. The emergence of generative AI systems capable of simulating empathic conversation, offering therapeutic advice, and functioning as “virtual spiritual companions” has triggered a pastoral identity crisis that transcends mere technical concerns. This article argues that an adequate pastoral response cannot be merely pragmatic-adaptive but must be rooted in a reinterpretation of the doctrine of Imago Dei as a robust foundation for pastoral anthropology. Through a systematic theological literature review, three primary AI threats to pastoral counseling are identified: anthropological reductionism, relational substitution, and vocational crisis. As a constructive response, a pastoral counseling framework grounded in Imago Dei is proposed, resting on three pillars: authentic presence, communal lament, and eschatological hope. This framework understands human beings as fundamentally beings-in-relation that cannot be replicated by any algorithm, thereby providing a firm theological basis for the relevance of pastoral counseling in the age of AI.
